Cyberattack Protection Guide

90% of Cyberattacks Start with Phishing: Protect Your Company's Data

Phishing accounts for a staggering 90% of all cyberattacks. These attacks are designed to steal your information, and more importantly, your company's sensitive data. Cybercriminals don't target your most tech-savvy employees; they often go after those with less technical knowledge. We all know someone in the company who isn't tech-proficient, and that's precisely the profile cybercriminals exploit. They'll try to learn everything about them:

  • Their usual online connection times.
  • Who they regularly interact with in the office.
  • The information stored on their laptop (likely including that file named "passwords").

A Stark Reminder

Remember the massive Yahoo data breach that compromised the information of 500 million users? This event served as a stark reminder that no data is truly secure, no matter how large the organization.

4 Ways to Protect Your Organization

That's why I'm sharing four crucial ways to keep hackers away from your organization's data:

1. Use Antivirus Software on All Systems:

Having antivirus on your computer is essential, but your mobile phone can also be a target for cyberattacks. In fact, many viruses have been discovered infiltrating mobile devices through apps downloaded from the Google Play Store.

A robust antivirus solution can prevent many problems. This is especially critical if your platform handles credit card details and sensitive customer data, as hackers are constantly looking for this type of information.

2. Update Your Software Frequently:

Think of your software like a house. Over time, cracks and holes can appear, allowing unwanted guests (or even rats!) to get in. That's why regular maintenance and patching are crucial for a home's structure. Software is similar; vulnerabilities can emerge over time, which cybercriminals can exploit.

But here's the key difference: you know your house, but the software used by your company or in your applications is publicly known! This makes it even more important to update your software regularly.

3. Use Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA):

Multi-factor authentication adds an extra layer of security to all your services, preventing cyberattackers from "forcing the door" to your systems. This is particularly important if you don't want to deal with overly complex passwords or tend to be forgetful... which brings me to my final point and recommendation.

4. Use Strong, Unique Passwords!:

I know that remembering multiple passwords can be tedious, but just like your house keys, it's vital to keep track of them and what they unlock! Fortunately, there are many secure password manager options available today.

However, if you're unsure, you can always use multi-factor authentication.
